SHS names student of the week
Q. In what grade are you currently enrolled?
A. I am currently a senior at Salisbury High School.
Q. Who is in your family? Please provide the first names of your family members: parents, siblings and pets.
A. The members of my family are my mother Sue, father Jeff and sister Paige. I also have a dog named Cheddar.
Q. What is your favorite subject? Why?
A. My favorite subject is biology, as I love looking at the intricacies of how we and the world around us function. I also find the designing and carrying out of labs to be both challenging and captivating ways to teach a lesson.
Q. Have you received any special awards or recognition?
A. I have received three letters in soccer and four letters in debate. I am also a member of National Honor Society. I am the vice president of Model UN. I have also received the Eagle rank in Scouting.
Q. Are you involved in any extracurricular activities? How has COVID-19 impacted these activities?
A. I am involved in debate, Model UN, soccer, skiing, esports club, chess club and Scouting. COVID-19 prevented many of these activities from meeting in person, which decreased interest in the clubs. We were still able to participate in sports such as soccer, which was very beneficial during such an isolated time. Moving from the pandemic, we are back in person in all activities and are growing from this experience.
Q. What is your next goal after high school?
A. After high school, I will be going to an undecided university where I will be studying biology and computer science. My ultimate goal is to develop technology for the health care system.
Q. What do you consider your biggest challenge to date?
A. My biggest challenge to date was leading 10 Scouts I did not know through a 12-day backpacking trip in New Mexico. They were relatively young and inexperienced and it was especially difficult to keep morale high due to it raining for seven days straight. We ended up finishing the 70-mile trek, knowing it was one of the greatest experiences we will have and we were able to grow and learn as a crew.
Q. For what would you like to be remembered?
A. I want to be remembered for my character. I hope I am known for meeting the standard of an Eagle Scout and following those ideals. I also want to be remembered for the things I accomplished in life and for having an overall beneficial impact on society.
Q. Whom do you admire? Why?
A. I admire my father. Being an Eagle Scout himself, I have always looked up to the values he holds. I also admire his dedication to being a leader in Scouting, not just for me, but for Scouts he has not known for very long. He is always willing to dedicate the little time he has to support me and those Scouts.
Q. Do you have any advice for your peers?
A. I advise my peers to just stay motivated and persevere through all of the challenges the world has thrown at us.
