Petke takes fourth in diving

Bethlehem Catholic junior Anna Petke landed a fourth place medal, and Moravian Academy senior Alexa Fegley won a fifth place medal at the PIAA Class 2A State Diving Championships last week at Bucknell University.

“Anna was very happy, and it was a happier moment for Anna in a way because she’s known she was supposed to be [at states] for three years,” said diving coach Emily Kocis.

Last year, Petke had to stay back because the field was limited to the top eight due to COVID. The year before, the state competition shut down just as the diving competition was supposed to begin.

Petke’s inward 1 1/2 scored the highest of the meet, about 40 points.

“She did very well on her inward dives, and she was the leader after the first round,” Kocis said.

Petke’s total was 379.50, and Fegley’s was 374.85.

“Alexa dove consistently and did very well on her inward as well,” said Kocis. “Alexa doesn’t plan to dive in college, so I was proud of how she continued through the season and going to states because most girls need the points for college.”

Liberty junior Keller Pooley competed in the Class 3A state championships where she placed 10th out of a field of 24.

Pooley’s first goal was to be in the top 16 so she could advance to finals, and the first-time state qualifier placed seventh after preliminaries and semifinals.

“Where the other divers will succeed is on degree of difficulty, and Keller doesn’t have the depth on those last three dives, but 10th without that is impressive,” Kocis said. “Her inward 1 1/2 was one of the best I’ve ever seen from jump to entry. She was all smiles and having fun. She knows she has another chance next year.”
