Area coaches, ADs try to predict NCAA champ

Which team will win the men’s NCAA tournament? It is always one of the most highly debated questions in the country?

Beginning Thursday, the tournament will shift to its Sweet Sixteen round and move forward to the national championship game Monday, April 4.

We all have our opinions, and here is a sampling of administrators, coaches, and players from Bethlehem Catasauqua, Northampton, and Whitehall.

Kyle Haas, Bethlehem Catholic head football coach: “UNC North Carolina meets Gonzaga in the final. Tennessee and Kansas are tough on the other side of the bracket. Gonzga wins it all.”

Adam Schnug, Catasauqua Principal: “I like Michigan. I think they are going to be the first #11 seed to win the title. Don’t sleep on them. I also will be picking Michigan to win the NCAA hockey title.”

Tom Moll, Catasauqua Athletic Director: “Arizona. I think they have the best chance to win it. I don’t think UNC will win it.

Steve Bradley, Catasauqua head baseball coach: “I say North Carolina because my AD likes them. And Baylor took them to overtime, and I think they are going to win it in overtime.”

Eric Snyder, Catasauqua head boys’ basketball coach; “Gonza. I picked them in my pool. They have size, experience, and talent. And the third time’s the charm for them. They finally get their title.”

Derek Troxell, former Catasauqua basketball, soccer, and baseball standout: “I think Gonzaga is going to take it all this year. With the talent of Chet Holmgren and the experience of Drew Timme and others, the Bulldogs are my favorite to win it all.”

Kyle Rusnock, Catasauqua head cross country and track coach: “Even though basketball isn’t my expertise, I like Gonzaga.”

Joe Russo, Catasauqua head wrestling coach: “Let’s Go Duke! Coach K is the man!”

Coy Stampone, Northampton head boys’ basketball coach: “Villanova. I have been a Villanova fan since I was little.”

Jeff Jacksits, Northampton head girls’ basketball coach: “I’m a die-hard Carolina fan, and I would love to see them win it all. But my mind tells me Kansas. They are a complete team and play well.”

Mick Sugra, Northampton head baseball coach: “Kansas, for no reason whatsoever. They have helped me to be second in my bracket contest.”

John Toman, Northampton head football coach: “I honestly do not follow college basketball. If I had to pick a winner, I would say Duke because I grew up with Duke upsetting UNLV and Billy McCaffrey playing for Duke. I want to see Coach K go out with one more title.”

Lucas Lesko, Northampton senior center: “I originally had Tennessee in my bracket because I thought they were a good sleeper team. My second choice was Kansas because they’re a solid team. But it’s Coach K’s final season at Duke, and it would be cool to see him go out winning it all.”

Cooper King, Northampton senior forward: “I think Auburn is going to be the champs. They have a great offense, and Jabari Smith is one of the best players in the tournament.”

Jeff Jones, head Whitehall boys’ basketball coach: “Gonzaga. They have players and coaches with lots of experience.”

Eric Schmitt, Whitehall head baseball coach: “I don’t watch a lot of college basketball anymore. But I was a huge Tar Heels (North Carolina) fan as a kid ... so ‘the ceiling is the roof!’”
