N. Catty seeking summer workers

North Catasauqua Borough Council, during its meeting March 21, approved a request by the North Catasauqua Recreation Committee to advertise for a summer helper position. Council President Peter Paone explained the committee hires a few people every year to help with the summer program at North Catasauqua William J. Albert Memorial Park, 701 Grove St.

Treasurer Annette Englert asked council to decide on a payment term for a loan from Community Leasing Partners to pay for new air packs for the fire department. From the options of a three-, four-, five- or seven-year plan, council decided the annual cost of the seven-year plan would be easier to put into the budget. The payment plan will begin in 2023.

Since council’s last meeting March 7, council’s interest in selling the property at 408 Buttonwood St. has shifted from the idea to sell via a real estate agent. The borough has now decided it will sell the lot at auction. Council made a motion to authorize the entry of the listing with the auctioneer.

Borough Secretary Tasha Jandrisovitz said she hopes the property will be sold within the next six to eight weeks.

Paone relayed a message from Travis Brett, public works supervisor, who was not present at the meeting. Northampton Borough will soon be going out for bid on road-paving materials and has offered to also ask for any additional materials North Catasauqua may need for its road repavings.

Brett is interested in repaving some alleys in the borough, including Crane Street behind borough hall and a stretch of Cypress Street. Those two projects would require about 800 tons of material.

Additionally, the borough will have to repave roads around the Main Street storm sewer project when that is completed. That will require more than 1,000 additional tons of repaving materials.

At Brett’s recommendation, council decided to request only the 800 tons needed for the alleys. The borough will save the rest of the money for next year when they can do the areas around Main Street.

Police Chief Chris Wolfer announced the North Catasauqua Police Department will be setting up a speed trailer on Grove Street by the park in the next few weeks. The department will also reportedly begin cracking down on parking issues, such as proximity of parked cars to intersections, stop signs and fire hydrants.

North Catasauqua Borough Council next meets 7 p.m. April 4.
