Lions Club gets back to bowling

The COVID-19 pandemic forced the Lions Club District 14K to cancel its annual bowlathon event. With a decline in COVID-19 cases, three Lions Club leaders decided it was time to restart the event.

Debbie Lillegard, Lions Club district governor; Kathy Duelley, first vice district governor; and Denise Shaffer, second vice district governor, assembled as a team to coordinate a return to Jordan Lanes, 731 Jordan Parkway, Whitehall. The bowlathon was held March 20.

The event was well attended, as the Lions occupied lanes 1-8. Lillegard, Duelley and Shaffer were delighted to restart the bowlathon, reportedly quite a hit with families and children.

The 2021-22 Lions theme is “serving from the heart of a Lion.” Sixteen local Lions Clubs make up District 14K, totaling more than 400 Lions Club members.

The Lions Club was founded in 1916 in Chicago by Melvin Jones. It was called the International Association of Lions Clubs, commonly known now as Lions Club International. The international organization claims there are nearly 1.4 million members worldwide in more than 46,000 clubs in 200-plus countries.

Lions Clubs have a local focus in their communities and seek out service projects for the betterment of their community. Lions help raise funds for international aid and focus on work for the blind and visually impaired. There is no limit to the service projects a Lions Club can engage.

Membership in a Lions Club is by “invitation only.” All member applicants must be sponsored by an active member in good standing with the local club. Prospective applicants must be of good moral character.
