Conditional Use hearing approved for Grist Mill Development

The March 3 meeting of the Lower Macungie Township Board of Commissioners started with a continuation of a conditional use hearing over the proposed Grist Mill Development, Brookside Meadows Apartments, 3500 Brookside Road next to Dries - a division of Wehrung’s, 3580 Brookside Road.

The land is 70 acres.

The commissioners expressed concern for water in the area after recent storms. The water was approximately two feet deep in the field proposed for development, according to the meeting discussion. Also noted was the flooding of the nearby underpass.

The question was put before the developers “were they comfortable with possible floodwater?”

Studies were done on the water issues. A proposal was to add a pipe to drain the area into the creek.

Another concern was mentioned regarding the trucks parked at the former Tyler Pipe lot as they are in the vicinity of the access road for the new development. This is the secondary emergency access area. This will be considered.

The proposal was put to a vote and approved with commissioners Richard Ward, Maury Robert and Brian Shoemaker voting in favor. President Brian Higgins and Commissioner Ron R. Beitler voted nay.

The Neighborhood Hospital Macungie proposal heard during a prior conditional use hearing also was approved.

Commissioners approved Resolution 2022-17. The resolution approves disposal of surplus personal property.

Resolution 2022-18 was approved. This resolution approves amendments to the fee schedule.

Executive sessions were held Feb. 28 and March 3. The subjects covered were land acquisition, legal subjects and conditional use hearings.

The Lower Macungie Township Community Center is open for public use. A new method for using the open gym is to obtain an annual membership of $10 for residents and $15 for nonresidents.
