House of Representatives citation announcing the official recognition of Feb. 24 as Pennsylvania SCN2A Awareness Day. Victoria Opthof-Cordaro, mother whose child is affected by the SCN2A genetic mutation, said the disorder in his case has resulted in autism, developmental delay, feeding difficulties and hypotonia. The citation was sponsored by state representatives Steve Samuelson and Robert Freeman. The Opthof-Cordaro family hopes the awareness day will bring more awareness to the SCN2A gene and the role scientists believe it plays in the development of autism and other neurodevelopmental and epilepsy disorders.
