Allentown motorist charged in pedestrian’s death; remains at large
In a media announcement dated March 8, Lehigh County District Attorney Jim Martin and Allentown Police Chief Charles Roca released charges against an Allentown motorist who allegedly struck a pedestrian and left the accident scene early in the morning of Feb. 15.
The pedestrian later died of his injuries, according to authorities.
Jose Rainer Gonzalez-Roman, 28, of Allentown, faces charges of alleged homicide by vehicle and accidents involving death or personal injury while not properly licensed, both felonies of the third degree; accidents involving death or personal injury; a felony of the second degree and summary charges of immediate notice of an accident to police, driving while operating privilege is suspended or revoked, reckless driving and duty to give information and render aid, according to a media release from the office of the Lehigh County District Attorney.
Steven Bernhard, 39, of Macungie, died in an area hospital after being struck by the vehicle driven by Gonzalez-Roman, according to authorities.
Charges were filed against Gonzalez-Roman, however, he is not in police custody.
Authorities detail the accident as follows:
At approximately 3:30 a.m. Feb. 15, an Allentown Police Department officer saw a white vehicle traveling at what is described by officials as a “very high rate of speed” in the 1000 block of West Tilghman Street.
While following the vehicle the officer came upon an unresponsive and seriously injured man in the road at North 17th Street and Sumner Avenue.
The man was later identified as Bernhard.
According to officials, a driver’s side vehicle mirror and other debris were found near Bernhard.
Bernhard was transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest campus. He was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to a media release from the Lehigh County Coroner’s Office.
An autopsy determined the cause of death was multiple blunt force trauma, according to officials.
Surveillance video from the area of the crash showed the white vehicle as it struck Bernhard.
Investigators determined Gonzalez-Roman to be driving the vehicle at the time of the crash. Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to contact the Allentown Police Department.
