Coplay police receive ballistic shields

The U.S. Deputy Sheriff’s Association has reportedly, via a grant, supplied ballistic shields to Coplay Police Department at no taxpayer cost, according to Mayor Stephen Burker.

The association is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to the assistance and support of law enforcement, their families and communities. It helps by providing training, equipment, cash grants and citizen awareness programs.

A ballistic shield is a handheld device police use to stand behind. They can repel handgun and shotgun blasts and provide protection from thrown items, such as bottles and knives.

These shields are typically used by a SWAT team during a tactical entry situation. In recent years, due to technological advances, an effective ballistic shield can weigh as little as 14 pounds. Earlier versions weighed as much as 50 pounds. The lighter weight led to increased interest by local police departments.

Burker noted he is proud of the borough’s police department and looks forward to working with and for the Coplay police.
