Salisbury swimmers compete in districts

Members of the Salisbury swimming team competed in the District 11 Class 2A Championships this past weekend at Parkland High School. In all, 12 Falcon swimmers competed in the event.

Junior Ella DeFazio medaled in the 100-yard breaststroke when she placed fourth with a time of 1:16.53.

“I’ve never finished this high before and I dropped a little bit of time, so I feel great,” said DeFazio. “I was really nervous because I have never been ranked in the second heat before, but it felt good to be out there competing.” The fastest swimmers and relay teams are seeded in the second heats of each event.

Freshman Sally Wiggins qualified for two individual events at districts, competing in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard freestyle. Wiggins finished 12th in the IM and 16th in the freestyle.

DeFazio was part of two relay teams with top 10 finishes. She teamed with classmate Allison Beckage and freshmen Wiggins and Amelia Swoyer n the 200-yard freestyle relay to finish ninth and also swam with the same group in the 200-yard medley relay where they placed 10th. The 400-yard freestyle relay team, comprised of Swoyer, Beckage, junior Gabriella DeJesus and freshman Daynara Ferrer, finished 10th to wrap up the two-day competition for the girls’ team.

On the boys’ side, Cameron Kubinsky left the pool with top 10 finishes in four events. The freshman swimmer finished ninth in the 200-yard freestyle and 10th in the 500-yard freestyle in individual events. In relays, Kubinsky was matched with senior Nicholas Jewell and juniors Jackson Kramp and Gavin Berger in the 200-yard medley relay and finished seventh. The 200-yard freestyle team of Kubinsky, Berger, Jewell and junior Noah Kichline finished ninth.

Salisbury’s 400-yard freestyle team turned in a ninth-place finish with the foursome of Berger, Jewell, Kichline and junior Charlie Morton.

In the team standings, the boys team placed seventh with 119 points while the girls team finished 10th with 67 points.

Blue Mountain High School dominated the event taking team gold medals in both the boys and girls competition. The Eagles girls team finished with what is believed to be a record score for a girls team when it racked up 456 points.

Salisbury had many good swims at districts with most of them coming from young swimmers who could help the team for the next few years.

“So many of our swimmers dropped a lot of time on their swims, even in double digits, which is amazing,” said DeFazio. “I am really proud of everyone and how well we competed.”
