Fehr advances to states while Brown, Hartranft end careers
For Cole Brown, it was about all about the four-year ride.
Brown, a 132-pound senior, was one of three Rough Rider grapplers who competed in the District 11 Class 2A Regionals at Freedom High School this past weekend. Regardless of his elimination after the first round of consolations, Brown enjoyed the moment.
“Regionals was definitely a new experience for me considering I have never been there before,” he said. “It was good to see how different the environment is compared to districts.”
Brown came off a fourth-place finish at districts the previous week. He finished with a 26-15 record this season and compiled an overall 56-40 record over his high school career.
Along with Brown, fellow senior Jaryn Hartranft ended his career at regionals with a seventh-place finish in the 145-pound bracket. The previous week, Hartranft was the runner-up at districts.
Hartranft finished the season with a 39-6 record, and he posted an overall 109-25 mark for his career.
As for Brown, he appreciated every step along the way. He was glad to be a consistent presence in the lineup after injuries wiped out most of his junior year.
“I think I had a great season,” he said. “Overall, I definitely improved drastically not only in my performance, but also in becoming a leader and captain. I’m sad to see another of my high school sports come to a close, but I’m definitely looking forward to track season.”
Junior Gavin Fehr will advance to the Class 2A state tournament in Hershey this weekend. He recorded a fourth-place finish at regionals after he was third at districts the previous week in the 138-pound weight class.
Fehr will bring a 36-11 seasonal slate and a 71-27 career record to states. His latest accomplishment was a bittersweet one.
“I felt all of us had a pretty good weekend,” said Fehr. “Cole and Jaryn both came up short qualifying for states, but they both wrestled a good tournament.
“I’m really excited that I qualified for states, but at the same time it stinks that I won’t get to wrestle with either of them again. I’m hoping to represent the school well and secure some wins out there.”
Making it to the Giant Center has been a lifelong ambition.
“I’ve been going out to Hershey every year with my dad to watch states since I was about nine of 10 years old,” he said. “It has always been a dream of mine to wrestle there.”
