Dagen Condomitti golden as three head to state wrestling tournament
The Dagen Condomitti deck party was held over for another weekend at Liberty High School as the Northampton junior registered three pins in just under a total of 3 minutes to claim the outstanding wrestler award at the PIAA AAA Northeast Regional wrestling tournament.
Condomitti has claimed a regional crown in each of his three varsity seasons, becoming the 9th K-Kid wrestler to claim at least that many. Next year, he could join Jeff Ecklof as the only other 4-timer.
This week he will try to join the pantheon of 17 other Northampton wrestlers as an individual state champion. Interestingly, the last 14 K-Kids’ individual state titles (by 7 wrestlers) have been won by someone whose first name starts with the letter ‘J,’ including brother Jagger last year.
After the medal ceremony, Condomitti described his mindset.
“I’m focused on one thing and that’s winning states,” he said. “So that’s what I’m going to try to do. And I don’t care who’s in my way, I’m going to run right through them.” He added, “I’m not overconfident. I just feel good about myself. I believe in myself and I think I can win states.”
Head coach Seth Lisa echoed the sentiments.
“Pinning those kids this week does not make you a state champ and he knows that,” Lisa said. “He’s ready to go out and wrestle some of the best kids in the state and I personally believe he’s the guy to beat.”
Joining Condomitti in Hershey will be Carson Wagner and CJ Fritz. Wagner medaled at states the previous two seasons at 106 pounds but has been hampered by a knee injury he suffered a month ago at district duals. With the injury and absolutely loaded 113-pound weight class, Wagner was limited to a fourth-place finish at regionals.
Fritz barely missed repeating as a regional finalist when he dropped a 3-2 decision to Nazareth’s Nick Foster in TB2 in the semifinals. He came back to take 4th and qualify for states for the second time. However, it will be his first appearance as a wrestler at Hershey because of the super regional level in place last year due to COVID.
Lisa remarked, “I’m glad CJ is going to get a chance to wrestle in Hershey. Even though he was a state qualifier last year, he missed that experience. It just wasn’t quite the same.”
Senior Rocky Cappolella (172) fell just short of going to states. In the blood round, he lost 5-3 on a last second takedown by Overbrook’s Souleymane Diarra. He finished his career on a winning note, claiming 5th place with a 2-1 win in TB2 over CJ Ross of Delaware Valley.
Junior Aiden Micheli (132) also took fifth with a 6-2 win over Owen Woods of Tunkhannock.
Austin Noe (120) and Mason Basara (138) finished in 6th at their respective weights to contribute to a fourth-place finish in the team standings behind Nazareth, Bethlehem Catholic, and Abington Heights.
