Hanover OKs bid for basketball court construction

During the March 2 meeting, Hanover Township, Lehigh County, Council accepted a bid offer from Charles D. Herman Inc. for construction planned for the Chestnut Grove Park basketball court, located on Grove Road.

The bid was awarded by a three-councilman vote, as Vice Chairman Michael Woolley and Rick Tocci were absent. The offer will still need to go through some inspections but was priced at $70,303.15, which is almost $5,000 under what township Engineer Al Kortze expected to spend.

The construction will include the complete removal and replacement of the existing blacktop, equipment and stone bases. The Chestnut Grove Park basketball court will be equipped with brand-new equipment, including backboards, baskets and nets. More information on construction will come as the project progresses.

In other business, Councilman Robert Heimbecker questioned Kortze on the Tacoma Street sinkhole. Kortze explained he believes it was caused by a freshwater leak.

He and township Manager Melissa Wehr have contacted the city water department on the matter. They have not heard anything back, but Wehr plans to follow up.

Council authorized the release of maintenance security for Primo Produce, 2100 Hoover Ave. Kortze explained to council members this was concerning the expansion of the warehouse facility and that the company has complied with all necessary requirements. The payment was in the amount of $58,144.50, which was the last hold on the company’s account.

The final resolution of the evening revisited a motion council passed during the previous meeting concerning Han-Le-Co Volunteer Fire Company and the township’s match fund contribution. Township Attorney Jackson Eaton suggested council table this matter until the following meeting, as both Woolley and Tocci were absent. Council agreed, and the resolution will make an appearance on the next agenda.

Council will meet 7:30 p.m. March 16 at the township building, 2202 Grove St. To view the agenda ahead of time, visit hanleco.org.
