Three Tigers reach SE Regional

Three Northwestern wrestlers advanced to this weekend’s Southeast Regional Championships with top-four finishes at districts.

Dalton Clymer, Mason Brensinger and Buck Miller will all compete this weekend at Freedom High School in hopes of advancing to the state finals next weekend in Hershey.

Clymer, the fifth seed, topped Jim Thorpe’s Gabe Heaney 3-0 in their 152-pound bout for third place at last weekend’s District 11 Class 2A Championships.

Clymer was tied with Saucon Valley’s Liam Scrivanich 4-4 in the semifinals with 0:05 left in regulation, but cramping issues – and ultimately the clock – ended his shot at the finals.

“We ran out of injury time,” said Tigers head coach Jim Moll. “His leg cramped up twice, and I guess technically we stopped treating him with time left on the clock. But I guess he has to be on the line ready to go.

“Things happen, and hopefully we get another shot at him next week.”

The sophomore won the 145-pound title in Class 2A a year ago and has battled injuries this season.

“He went through a lot of adversity with a hip injury, being able to know how to train and how to treat that,” said Moll. “His hour in the training room is part of his practice every day. It’s crazy. But to have the discipline to keep doing it, to get it healthy enough and put himself in a spot where he has a chance to be in the district finals, and wrestle at regionals, I’m happy. We’re right where we want to be at the end of the year.

“He’s wrestling better right now than he has all year, which is the goal.”

Clymer advanced to the third-place match with a 12-0 major decision over Palmerton’s Dennis Lombardi, who was seeded third.

Northwestern’s Mason Brensinger (160) and Buck Miller (172) also advanced to regionals with fourth-place finishes at districts.

Brensinger won his first two matches before falling in the semifinals to top seed and eventual champ Holden Garcia of Notre Dame (Green Pond). He bounced back with a win in the consolation semifinals, but dropped his third-place to North Schuylkill’s Nick Stoyer via tiebreaker, 4-3. Brensinger had beaten Stoyer 4-1 in the quarterfinals.

Miller, a junior, also won his first two matches before falling in the finals to an eventual champ and top seed. Jacob Jones (Saucon Valley) beat Miller by decision, 6-2.

Miller won his first consolation match and then fell to Garrett Tettemer of Notre Dame (Green Pond), 4-1 in the third-place bout.

The Tigers, which entered just seven wrestlers in districts, had two other place winners as senior Nathan Peters (189) and sophomore Noah Schlofer each reach the fifth-place bout in their weight class.

Schlofer beat Tri Valley’s Braxton Schwartz for fifth place, while Peters fell to Central Catholic’s Jakub Gloc in his fifth-place bout.

Notre Dame (Green Pond) won the team title with 300.5 points. The Crusaders crowned six champs Saturday. Saucon Valley (286.5) crowned seven champs. Those two teams accounted for the champions in all 13 weight classes.

Northwestern finished eighth as a team at districts, just behind Salisbury (75) and ahead of Wilson (69.5).

The PIAA Southeast Regional will be held Friday and Saturday at Freedom High School. The top six wrestlers in each weight class advance to the state championships in Hershey March 10-12.
