Pooley takes second
Liberty junior Keller Pooley rose from a fourth-place finish at the East Penn Conference diving meet three weeks ago to winning the silver medal at the District XI Class 3A Diving Championships on Saturday at Emmaus High School.
“I’m super, super excited. I did not think I was going to be second, and I wasn’t looking at the standings until after the second round, and I looked and was kind of really surprised at where I was,” Pooley said. “It gave me some adrenaline for the last round, but then I had to calm myself down a bit, but I did really good. I’m really happy. I wasn’t putting a lot of pressure on myself to be second, and I told myself to just do good dives.”
Pooley scored high marks on her reverse dive pike, including three sevens.
“That reverse dive is probably my scariest dive,” she said. “I landed on my back in that at the last meet, so I’ve never gotten that high on that dive. That was my biggest accomplishment.”
Pooley’s overall score was 369.85, only 10 points off the first-place finish of Easton’s Rachel Marcus.
“We definitely had a goal going into this that she wanted to be in the top four, but today she brought a level of consistency where she was above average on everything which carried her right into the second-place spot,” said Liberty diving coach Emily Kocis. “I am exceptionally happy with Keller’s performance today.”
Other medalists were Parkland’s Nicole Stofko, who placed third with a score of 336.40 and Easton’s Madison Cunard, who placed fourth with a score of 324.10.
Pooley and Marcus will advance to the PIAA State Class 3A Diving Championships later this month at Bucknell University.
