Fegley wins third title

Moravian Academy senior Alexa Fegley was crowned District XI Class 2A diving champion for the third year in a row last Saturday at Emmaus High School.

“I felt the pressure,” Fegley said. “Anna (Petke) and I go back-and-forth every year, and we were both hitting all our dives, so it was definitely close.”

Petke, a Bethlehem Catholic junior, won the silver medal with a score of 361.80.

“Overall, I had a great day,” Petke said. “One of my dives, I did poorly on because I got a little distracted, and my feet were off the board, and that made me go down a little, but overall, I did very well.”

It was Petke’s reverse dive pike that caused some trouble on Saturday, but the Becahi junior recovered with high marks on her back one somersault one-and-a-half twist.

“I did very well in that, and my inward one-and-a-half went very well,” she said. “[The silver medal] is good. Next year I’m hoping for gold, so that’s what I’m looking for.”

Diving coach Emily Kocis, who coaches both girls, called Fegley’s performance the meet of her career, scoring 404.30 points.

“Alexa had a stellar performance,” Kocis said. “Anna lost a little bit in those middle rounds and was able to pull back up, but it just wasn’t enough. She was only four points behind Alexa after the first five, so, not bad. There were just a couple things here and there we can fix up before states and get her up into the higher scores.”

Fegley scored high on her reverse dive pike, including three eights.

“My back-and-a-half was higher than normal, but my inward dive was probably the highest-scoring dive I had,” she said.

Fegley and Petke will advance to the PIAA State Class 2A Diving Championships later this month at Bucknell University.
