LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Earth Day cleanup set April 23

Last week’s surprisingly warm mid-week days trailed by a wintry mix overnight Friday, which left brisk temperatures, icy roads, glittering trees and scattered snow in its wake may have inspired thoughts of Punxsutawney Phil’s prediction of six more weeks of winter this time last month.

In my case, it was more grumblings about that famous groundhog while spreading rock salt to melt ice in the driveway than particularly kind thoughts of him. Six more weeks?! Good grief.

Spring is coming, albeit too slowly for many. As proof, exhibit A is the annual Earth Day event in Upper Milford Township and Emmaus Borough scheduled April 23.

Hosted by the Joint Environmental Advisory Council of the two municipalities, this year’s event will start 8 a.m.

A clean-up only iteration of the annual event took place in 2021. Volunteers cleared litter, leaves and other debris from various sites including recreational areas such as Emmaus Community Park, Jasper Park and Lenape Park; historic sites such as the 1760 House and the Emmaus Public Library grounds. Volunteers also moved two maple and two oak trees from the library grounds to an area in Emmaus Community Park.

According to a memo from the council released last year, 59 30-gallon bags of trash were collected as well as seven 30-gallon bags of recyclables.

Volunteers included members of service clubs, Scout troops and businesses.

Spring also traditionally brings road work projects and this year is no exception.

Cassel Road from Urffers Road to Eberhard Road, Lower Milford Township, is closed while the Pennsylvania Turnpike Cassel Road bridge is replaced. Work is expected to continue through Nov. 4. Detours are posted.

The project is part of work to the Pennsylvania Turnpike by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

A reminder to residents of Upper Milford Township; materials borrowed from the Emmaus Public Library can be placed in the library drop box at the township building, 5671 Chestnut St.

The next meeting of the Lower Milford Township Supervisors is 6:30 p.m. March 3 at the township building, 7607 Chestnut Hill Church Road.

Upper Milford Township Supervisors next meet 7 p.m. March 3 and 17 at the township building, 5671 Chestnut St. and via Zoom.
