Special to The Press
Allentown Central Catholic High School’s girls basketball coach, Mike Kopp, announced he will retire at the close of the 2022 postseason.
Kopp coached for 42 years at Allentown Central Catholic High School (1980-2022). Under Kopp’s leadership, the Vikette basketball team won five Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association, Inc. titles, 21 district titles and 18 conference championships. The Vikettes won four straight PIAA titles from 2001-2004.
In January 2020, Kopp earned his 1,000th career win and became only the third scholastic coach ever to achieve that honor in Pennsylvania.
We would like to thank Coach Kopp for his commitment to ACCHS and our student-athletes. Coach Kopp has set a standard for excellence we should all aspire for. It is impossible to put into words the many contributions Coach Kopp has made to our community as teacher, administrator, coach and mentor. His legacy will be forever etched in the hearts of the ACCHS community.
Great job by our ACCHS chess team who participated in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Invitational Chess Tournament at Parkland High School Feb. 24 - Nathan Myers, Adam Issermoyer, Martin Khoury, Isaac Wheeler, Tanner Temple, Thomas St. Pierre and Alvaro Cuesta.
Our Vikings and Vikettes visited the National Centre for Padre Pio in Barto Feb. 11. Padre Pio was a priest, teacher, mystic, saint and friend to many people. Students participated in a Mass at the Spirituality Center, visited the Our Lady of Grace Chapel (an historically accurate Franciscan site based on Padre Pio’s own church) and saw the largest collection of authentic Padre Pio relics in the United States in the museum and cultural center. The Vikes ended their day with an ice cream treat from Longacres.
Congratulations to Tyson Thomas and Julia Roth, First Team EPC All Stars, who were honored during the championship games at the PPL Center Feb. 17.
Register for spring sports on FamilyID by March 4. All athletes are required to have a current FamilyID registration for the 2022 season, a current PIAA physical dated after June 1, 2021 and an Impact test. Impact tests are good for two years and are being done at home. Visit www.acchs.info/physicals for directions on at-home Impact testing. Athletes who do not have all of these items will be unable to participate in the first day of practice.
