Zephyrs preparing for D-11 wrestling tournament

After an inconsistent season, Whitehall head wrestling coach Tim Cunningham is hoping for some stability at the District 11 meet this weekend.

“The season has had its ups and downs,” he said. “But the guys have been working very hard in the room, and no one should take anything away from them.

“We have been working to make improvements every day.”

The Zephyrs finished the regular season with an overall 5-4 dual meet slate. They finished third at the Falcon Invitational at Cedar Crest High School, seventh at the War at the Shore at Stephen Decatur High School, and 19th at the Bethlehem Holiday Wrestling Classic Whitehall also has a ninth-place finish at the East Penn Conference Team Duals.

According to Cunningham, senior 152-pounder Xaiver Arner is unavailable for the district tournament. Arner, who placed second at regionals and didn’t place at states last year, finished with a 26-2 season mark and an overall 94-28 record.

Fellow senior, 132-pounder Tyler Cunningham, who has a 25-8 record, has a legitimate shot to move on to regionals. He was fourth at districts last year.

His father has watched his only son clear many hurdles from the wrestling room and the sidelines.

“He has been able to grind through numerous injuries over the last three years,” said the coach about his son. “His ability to work through adversity has improved.

“Being the coach’s son, he has handled some of the negativity quite well.”

The Zephyrs will not have a full lineup, as they will have holes at 152, 160, 172 and 215.

Along with Cunningham, senior Johnny Colon (20-4) should have an opportunity to place near the top in the 132-pound bracket. Senior Anthony Saed (23-9) will look to make some noise at 285.

Junior Melquan Warren (22-6) can also be a factor at 189, as Warren has only four defeats since December. Fellow junior Hudson Saylor (13-12) and sophomore Seth Pascoe (14-10) will battle at 138 and 145 respectively.

The Zephyrs have a budding lineup in the lower weights with freshman Dayvion Marshmon (13-11) at 106, sophomore Damond Pascoe (12-11) at 113, and freshman Nolan Schemechenbecher (6-19) at 120.

Cunningham knows his team’s trek won’t be easy.

“We have been working down the stretch to perform for the postseason,” added Cunningham. “We understand it takes a lot of hard work to compete in districts, but we’ll be ready.”
