“Bye, Bye, Birdie” rocks the stage, 7 p.m. March 3, 4, 5; 2 p.m. March 6, Northwestern Lehigh High School, 6493 Route 309, New Tripoli, Lynn Township.

The musical, with music by Charles Strouse, lyrics by Lee Adams and book by Michael Stewart, opened on Broadway in 1960 and in 2009 as a Broadway revival.

“Bye, Bye, Birdie” was released as a movie in 1963 and in 1995 as a television production.

Rock star and Army conscript Conrad Birdie performs a farewell concert prior to reporting for duty in 1958. The satiric musical revolves around a desperate songwriter and his secretary, as well as a fan, her family and the teenager’s jealous boyfriend.

“This is a toe-tapping, family musical with laughs, young love, and Ed Sullivan,” says Director Bill Mutimer, Northampton Community College Theater Department Chair and Artistic Producing Director, Northampton Community College Summer Theatre.

Assisting are Musical Director Chad Miller and Choreographer Tina Somes-Williams.

The original Broadway production was nominated for eight Tony Awards, receiving four Tonys in 1961.

Production numbers include “A Lot of Livin’ to Do,” “An English Teacher,” “The Telephone Hour” “Spanish Rose” and “Put On a Happy Face.”
