Hurricane wrestlers aiming high at districts

Liberty’s Memorial Gymnasium is the site of this weekend’s District 11 3A wrestling tournament and the host Hurricanes hope it can bolster their showing at the start of the individual postseason.

The Hurricanes bring two returning medalists to this weekend’s tournament and head coach Brandon Hall is hoping the team can make a splash in their home gym.

“We believe we can potentially push five maybe six kids to regionals if they wrestle well,” said Hall. “You never know how the seeds affect who meets who in those consolation semifinal matches. I’ve been around long enough to know that we could also only push a couple to regionals if kids aren’t wrestling in the moment, one point at a time.”

Javien Deleon (132) and Christian Reid (160) finished third and fourth respectively last season and should be near locks to move on to regionals, as the top-five wrestlers in each weight class advance.

Liberty will have 12 wrestlers competing this weekend, with 113-pounds being the only weight without an entrant.

“I think Javien and Christian should make it out of districts,” Hall said. “Ryan Santiago (145) has a good chance too. Kam Abboud (126) has been wrestling well and Sawyer Quayle (215) has a chance too. Depending on how things line up at 106, Jasiah Pagan also has a shot.”

With a few weeks off between District Duals and the individual postseason, Hall hopes the time in the practice room can reinvigorate the squad.

“While we’d like to be competing over the past couple weeks,” Hall said. “This time does give us a chance to really focus on individual work, preparing each varsity kid for what they need personally in the post season. It’s also given some kids the opportunity to heal up from nagging injuries.”

Wrestling gets underway Friday at 4 p.m. with pigtails and continues with quarterfinals at 6 p.m., followed by first round consolations at 8 p.m. Saturday’s action begins at 9 a.m. with second round consolations, followed by semifinals and third round consolations at 10:30 a.m. Fourth round consolations are at 1 p.m. with the third and fifth place matches taking place at 4 p.m.

Championships finals (both 3A and 2A) get underway at 5:45 p.m.
