Curtain Rises: Munopco will ‘Rock’; Crest has ‘Good Man’

Two musicals about youth are opening in the Lehigh Valley.

Munopco Music Theatre presents “School of Rock: the Musical,” Feb. 26 - March 6, Scottish Rite Cathedral, 1533 Hamilton St., Allentown.

Cedar Crest College Performing Arts Department stages “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” Feb. 25-27, Samuels Theatre, on the west Allentown campus.

The feel-good musical inspired by the “Peanuts” comic strip, first penned by Charles Schulz in 1950, has a cast of 13 actors, including Cedar Crest and Northampton Community College students and community members.

“You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” brings the beloved comic’s characters to life with tuneful songs and familiar scenes from the comic strip.

The musical, with music and lyrics by Clark Gesner, premiered in 1967. It features the whole gang, including bossy Lucy (Carter Reichard), who is hopelessly in love with piano prodigy Schroeder (Cameron Kunsman), who doesn’t give her the time of day; perfectionist Sally (Mackenzie Lewis), who mocks blanket-toting Linus (Todd Croslis); Snoopy (Ashlyn Auriemma) and his antics on his doghouse, and the “blockhead” himself, Charlie Brown (Anthony Rizzuto).

Vignettes span the months from Valentine’s Day to Beethoven Day, from wild optimism to utter despair with songs that include the title tune and “Happiness,” “The Kite” and “My New Philosophy.” The revised version includes additional music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa and dialogue by Michael Mayer.

The ensemble includes Madison Anusky, Lukas Barnett, Zaria Berry, Joanne Holler, Mark Ingram, Corrine McClain and Deven Windisch.

JoAnn Wilchek Basist directs, Brian M. Foley is music director and Joanellyn Schubert is choreographer.

Performances are 7 p.m. Feb 25; 1, 6 p.m. Feb. 26 and 1 p.m. Feb. 27.

Audience members must wear face masks.

“School of Rock” is a rock musical with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, based on the 2003 cult film of the same name that starred Jack Black.

The musical is about Dewey Finn (Andrew Mark Schaffer), an out-of-work rock singer and guitarist who pretends to be a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school.

After noticing musical talent in his students, Dewey forms a band of fifth-graders in an attempt to win the upcoming “Battle of the Bands” contest.

The show was notable on Broadway for its use of pre-teen performers who could play their own instruments.

In Munopco’s production, the young musicians are age 7 and up and include Laila Asghar, Khylah Eure, Ryan Pakzad, Nyrie Washburn, Ella Bruch, Abby Carrig, Shy Torres, Noah Saborsky, Keane Carrington, Samantha Rodriguez, Laney Levin, Kayla Carrington, Jacob Miller, William Saborsky, Taylor Green, and Nevaeh Nuber-Laubach.

The rock-style score includes three songs from the original film as well as 12 new songs composed by Lloyd Webber with lyrics by Glenn Slater (“Tangled,” “Sister Act”).

The cast of more than 30 includes teachers played by Melissa Dorflinger, Colton Boyd and Heather LaBelle. Also in the cast: Darice Hoffman, Jim Hoffman, Jesse Saborsky, Amy Saborsky, Billy Ehrlacher, Gloria Milheim, Beth Hoppes, Lillian Rodriguez, Amy Green, Chad Miller and Jay David.

Director is Becky Saunders, choreography is by Darice Hoffmann and music direction by Chad Miller.

Performances are 7:30 p.m. Feb. 26, March 4, 5 and 2 p.m. Feb. 27, March 6.

Audience members must wear face masks.
