Salisbury girls battled through injury-riddled 2021-22 season

The Salisbury High School girls basketball team had an unlucky 2021-22 campaign that was marred by injuries. With limited numbers for depth across all levels of the program, head coach Dan Reichenbach and his staff had a tough time competing at the highest level against the Colonial League and District 11 opponents.

There were high goals and expectations leading in to the start of this season due to the talent of the upperclassmen, but the Falcons were unable to see how it all would’ve fallen into place had everyone been out on the court at the same time for an extended period of time on the year. Salisbury concluded its season at Southern Lehigh on February 3rd.

“With three starters back from last year, Quinn Wittman, Krista Bonge and Hannah Kamp, I really thought we would be at least a .500 team and would make the playoffs,” said Reichenbach. “Unfortunately, having five season-ending injuries and Quinn and Hannah playing hurt all year made that a tough task.

“With having only 17 girls in the program and a couple of girls who decided last minute not to play, we just didn’t have the depth to compete. This showed up many times during the season as we were in many games for a half only to completely run out of gas in the second half.”

Wittman will leave the program as one of the most successful in program history.

“Quinn ended her career with 820 career points and led us all four years in scoring, steals, and assists,” Reichenbach said. “Having coached at different levels for over 20 years, she is probably the toughest and one of the most coachable kids I’ve ever had the pleasure of coaching.”

The Falcons will graduate four seniors, including Wittman, Bonge, Moriana Pyssame Shields and Marcie Silberman.

“Having coached Quinn and Krista since seventh grade, I will miss them and have really enjoyed our time together,” said Reichenbach. “I had hoped Marcie could have played a full year as I think she could have really helped us. Hopefully she will be fully recovered for the softball season. I’ll miss Moana’s upbeat personality and fist bumps.”

Kamp and Angela Bitar will be seniors next season and a majority of the returning roster will be sophomores or juniors.
