Nitschmann MS Principle Dr. Peter Mayes addressed the school board Feb. 14 as an advocate for the Fit for Life program that is being suggested as part of the sports medicine sponsorship agreement with St.Lukes Hospital.
Mayes stressed the importance of additional programming for all kids, but specifically those transitioning from elementary to middle school. This program would provide opportunities for all children in the district, as well as securing strong relationships with community partners, such as the City of Bethlehem, Moravian University, and the Health Bureau.
Meanwhile, Superintendent Dr. Joseph Roy reported the district has been reevaluating its current mask mandate. He said the tiered approach no longer seems applicable since vaccinations are rising and COVID cases are dropping. Under the advisement of community partners, the district is considering more directly following current federal rules, which make masking optional, permitted, or required depending on personal vaccination and circumstances.
City Health Director Kristen Wenrich was present and told the board, “Its time for a common sense approach to COVID. Frequent hand washing, staying home when you feel ill and getting vaccinated all help.”
Roy said the COVID numbers have dropped to 9 per day across all BASD schools. Conversations with other community partners appear to look favorably upon this change. Board members will have the chance to vote on this at the next regular board meeting scheduled for Feb. 28, possibly making the change effective March 1.
