Boys await start of districts
Northampton’s boys’ basketball team has shot the ball well all season. It has been a major factor for their 17-6 record this winter.
Unfortunately, the Konkrete Kids had fate befell them at the wrong time.
Northampton recently dropped an East Penn Conference semifinal game to Parkland, 56-37, at Allentown’s PPL Center.
“We just didn’t shoot well,” said Northampton head coach Coy Stampone. “They (Parkland) also did a great job against our match (match-up zone), and we had to play man-to-man.
“Their top eight guys can all make three-pointers. They shot well. With a 6-10 kid inside, it also made it difficult for us. They did a great job defensively on (Issac) Harris, and also on (Lucas) Lesko.
“That’s high school sports. You will have your off nights.”
Harris, who averages 20 points a game, was held to eight by the Parkland defense. He and his team likely got a wake-up call at the right time.
“The Parkland game was an experience for us,” said the senior. “My teammates and I have put a lot of time into the season, and we knew we couldn’t win every game.
“We fed off being an underdog, and that is now what we are. We took the Parkland game personally, and we are coming for it all now.”
The Kids now will have roughly two weeks before they begin district play. They finished as the second seed in the district Class 6A bracket, and will open their postseason play against Liberty.
It is now a waiting game.
“You can lose some momentum, but we have been there before,” added Stampone. “We just have to be creative. We’re working on a scrimmage, and we’ll play a mock game to try to keep them on their normal schedule for the week.
“We’ll see the same teams again, and we know what each team has. We could end up playing Parkland again. We just have to go out and play and be ready. These guys are pretty determined, and they expect to go far.”
Harris realizes the heightened state ahead.
“We are coming for it all now,” he stressed. “We are in a lose and go home situation, and we will be ready for districts.
“We have two weeks. When those two weeks are up, we will be better and a more dangerous team to look out for.”
