Boy swimmers finish season at 8-4
Whitehall head coach Pete Rile is confident his teams’ recent wins over Moravian Academy can be a springboard in some ways toward the postseason and the future.
The girls captured a 85-79 victory, and the boys squad took home a 88-82 triumph.
“That was a good meet and win for us,” said Rile. “It was a big win too because it was at their pool. We knew going into it that the girls were the underdog, and the boys would be close.
“The girls built a lead and then held on by winning the 400 meter relay. The boys were pretty steady all throughout.”
Rile was pleased with his team’s overall performance and also from the overall support.
“We had eight personal bests and 12 season-best times,” he noted. “It was a really exciting meet with a good crowd behind us that was yelling and screaming. Overall, it was a good night for both of us.”
Sophomore Aaron Stinner broke the Moravian pool record in the 500 free with a time of 4:49.66. Rile sees Stinner and fellow sophomore Ian Thomas being a fixture at districts.
“He (Stinner) should be seeded high at districts,” said Rile. “Aaron has missed breaking six records within 100th of a second. He really has been consistent.”
Rile stated the boys finished with an overall 8-4 record, and it marked their third consecutive winning season.
“They were very close to being 9-3,” he said. “That would have been their best record. They really had a solid season.”
The girls finished with an overall 3-9 slate, and Rile was satisfied.
“We didn’t know what to expect,” he said. “Their numbers were down. In a way, they overachieved this year. They have some young swimmers who can help us in the next few years.”
Rile is optimistic that he will have some swimmers in district slots, but he has to stay the course.
“It’s a strategy game,” he stressed. “No one wants to give out their lineup. Every team is trying to get an advantage.”
The Zephyrs will continue to practice until the district swimming meet at Emmaus March 4-5.
“We’ll get the seeding times, and go from there,” said Rile. “We’ll keep swimming for a few more weeks.”
