Dolores R. Smith

Dolores R. Smith, 92, of New Ringgold and Fellowship Manor, Whitehall, died Feb. 2, 2022, surrounded by loved ones in Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township.

The loving wife of the late Harvey L. Smith Jr., the couple was married 68 years at the time of his death in 2017.

Born June 1, 1929, in Lansford, Carbon County, she was the daughter of the late Louis D. and Lucy (Izzo) Astolfi.

After graduating from Tamaqua High School and attending Drake College of Business in Newark, N.J., she and her husband lived in Newport, R.I., before becoming the second generation co-owners of Smith’s Country Inn, New Ringgold, for 62 years.

Their business was recognized as the longest continuous running business in Schuylkill County, having started as a stage coach stop in 1769.

She developed the restaurant’s fine cuisine and enjoyed great friendships with her customers from throughout eastern Pennsylvania.

In her free time, she enjoyed time with family, especially trips to Lancaster County and family trips to Disney World, as well as her home and gardens.

She was a Golden Star (50 year) member of Orwigsburg Chapter 424, O.E.S.

Her survivors include a daughter Sandra L. Bodnyk of Orefield; grandson Michael John Bodnyk Jr. of Sarasota, Fla.; brother Frank D. Astolfi (Kay) of North Wales; nieces and nephews Jennifer Bowen, Evan Bowen (Amanda), Annette Davis (John), Kim Burns (Tom), Bruce Bailey (Diane), and Charles Bailey (Laura); and friend and caregiver Debra Bagdonis.

She was predeceased by her son-in-law, the Rev. Michael J. Bodnyk Sr. and siblings Philomena Bowen (Evan), Louis Astolfi Jr. and Mary Astolfi.
