At the Feb. 8 meeting, Coplay Borough Council Mayor Stephen Burker reported he, council President Louis Bodish and Vice President Charles Sodl met with Dale Simon, president of the Coplay Senior Citizens organization, at the club’s February meeting.
With more than 75 club members in attendance, Burker and the council members assured the club members they would do everything possible to make sure there will always be a place in the borough for the group to meet.
The club rents the meeting space from Commitment to Family and Community, which has rented the borough building at 165 Cherry St. for quite some time.
CFC’s lease with the borough is set to expire this month. Recently, CFC requested permission from council to rent the borough-owned facility for one more month, through March.
However, a motion was made at the February council meeting to terminate the CFC lease Feb. 28. The motion carried unanimously.
Council approved the assignment of Officer Nathan Smith from a 32-hour part-time officer to a full-time officer on the borough police department, effective immediately.
Additionally, council approved the hiring of Quentin Knecht as a full-time police officer beginning in March.
Bodish gave the public works report and indicated the fee the borough pays to East Penn Sanitation to dispose of garbage is increasing from $77 per ton to $89 per ton.
Council voted in favor of hiring Hailstone Economics, based in Scranton, to advise the borough on satisfying funding requirements from grants received related to COVID-19.
Council also approved the use of Saylor Park for a borough-sponsored craft fair, scheduled for April 23 and 24.
