Alfred Regits
Alfred Regits, 89, of Catasauqua, died Feb. 9, 2022, at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Muhlenberg. He was the husband of the late Marilyn M. Regits for 61 years.
Born in Catasauqua, he was a son of the late John and Susanna (Panscherovitch) Regits.
He was a Catasauqua High School graduate.
He was in the U.S. Navy aboard the submarine USS Requin 481, known as the Galloping Ghost. He was a member of the U.S. Submarine Veterans Pittsburgh Requin Base, the Lehigh Valley Base and the Holland 50-Year Club.
He was a maintenance mechanic and electrician for Tarkett Company, Fullerton; Champion Spark Plug, Hellertown; and Cotter-True Value Distribution Center, Fogelsville.
He was an active firefighter and officer for more than 25 years for the Catasauqua Fire Department. As an officer, he assisted in revising and updating the fire department ordinances. He was an organizer of the Catasauqua Firefighters Association and served as its first secretary/treasurer. He was an officer with Phoenix Steam Fire Company and was a lifetime member of the Southwark Hose Company No. 9 and the East End Fire Company. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Calvary Council 528, Allentown and the police pension board.
He was a 22-year president, during his 36 years as a member, of the Catasauqua Borough Council. In 1997, he was honored with the Thomas Crosthwaite Award by the Pennsylvania Association of Boroughs for more than 20 years of outstanding community service. In 2008, he received the association’s Board of Directors Award for 30 or more years of service.
He was, in 2012, named a member of the Catasauqua Hall of Fame. In 2013, Mayor Barbara Schlegel declared Dec. 18 to be Alfred A. Regits Day. He volunteered for the community for 60 years, including the food bank and town watch.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Catasauqua. He was on the cemetery advisory committee.
He is survived by a daughter, Rita Greb and husband Matthew; a son, Michael and wife Margaret; five grandchildren, Chrystal Kuchinos, Ashley Greb, Shawn Regits, Danielle Vitushinsky and Jonathan Regits; nine great-grandchildren, Trevor, Gavin, Lily, Luke, Kaiden, Brandon, Kaylee, Logan and Ella; nieces; and nephews.
He was predeceased by a son, Mark Regits; a great-grandson, Nathan Kuchinos; a brother, William; and four sisters, Helen, Margaret, Susan and Catherine.
