Jan. 26 marked the second meeting of the month for the borough council of Alburtis.

The meeting began without public comment. Instead, there was an announcement from Council President Ron DeIaco there was an executive session discussing pension before the regular meeting.

Following, the meeting minutes from Jan. 12, the bills for payment, and the fiscal consultant’s report were approved without comment.

The Macungie Ambulance report showed 18 calls were made for service.

In administration, the vacant police chief position was discussed. The vacancy is due to the recent retirement of former Alburtis Police Chief Robert Palmer.

After a strenuous interview process, Tony Alsleben was selected to be the next Alburtis Police Chief. Alsleben still needs to go in front of the borough civil service commission. If he passes, then he will be nominated and approved as the official chief of police.

The Alburtis Police Department is currently led by Mayor Kathleen Palmer. She is the point of contact.

Next, the ARPA Funds allowed uses was on the agenda. There were a lot of stipulations with the use of the money. Alburtis will be allowed to put the money in the borough’s general fund. So, it can go to funding road and infrastructure repairs in the borough, plus some upcoming projects.

A discussion on the Alburtis upper ball field playset followed. Alburtis Parks and Recreation council representative Stephen Nemeth stated he discussed grant possibilities and playset options with other parks departments, specifically Allentown and South Whitehall. He stated he will continue to inquire about grants and pricing for playset options.

In maintenance, a John Deere mower was approved for purchase. Additionally, cameras and truck signage were discussed, but nothing was put into action. There are only a few signs about no long trucks and officials want to try to move signage farther out in the borough to warn truckers.

The next borough council meeting will take place Feb. 9. The meetings take place at Alburtis Borough Hall, 260 Franklin St., Alburtis. The council meetings begin 7 p.m.
