Gallery View: Bethlehem Palette Club presenting juried awards
There are 38 works by 23 members of the Bethlehem Palette Club in its “2022 Juried Exhibit,” with a closing reception, 1 - 3 p.m., with awards presented at 2:30 p.m., Feb. 13, Rotunda Gallery, City Hall, Bethlehem.
The Bethlehem Palette Club was founded in 1947 by nine artists.
“Over the years it has expanded geographically and includes pretty much of the Lehigh Valley,” says Pat Delluva, member artist and one of the exhibit coordinators. The club has 135 members.
“It has retained the name because of the history behind it,” Delluva says.
Juror Nicole Gencarelli, a non-club member, selected winning entries in a variety of media, including oils, acrylics, watercolors and pastels. Prizes range from $50 to a top award of $300. Gencarelli is an arts administrator at ArtsQuest’s Banana Factory Arts Center, Bethlehem, and a Lehigh Valley-based artist.
“The aspect of the work collected in this exhibition that struck me the most was the celebration of small joys and moments,” relates Gencarelli in her juror’s statement.
“Little moments and vignettes we have maybe all noticed a little bit more as the world changed and continues to change around us so quickly. To be present in a moment is what ties together all of the various scenes and styles exhibited in this show.”
The top cash prize of $300 is to Arlene B. Ginsburg for her “Manhattan Beach” (2022; watercolor on Yupo paper, 18 in. x 24 in.).
Others chosen for cash awards are: Deborah Walkowiak, Second Place, $250, “Bushel of Blues” (acrylic); Barbara Tracy, Third Place, $200, “Steadfast” (acrylic); Paul McGinn, Fourth Place, $150, “Morning Mist” (oil); Sandra Corpora, Fifth Place, $100, “Sky Holes” (oil); Carol Perlowski, Sixth Place, $75, “Red and White Onions” (oil), and Jacqueline Meyerson, Seventh Place, $50, “Going Nuts” (pastel).
Honorable Mentions were garnered by Pam Bayliss, “Imagination” (pen and ink); Mary Millan Klunk, “Moonlit Paths” (acrylic), and Bernie Tyler, “Pot of Flowers” (watercolor).
The exhibition is sponsored by the Bethlehem Fine Arts Commission.
Awards funding is provided by MCS Industries; In Memoriam, David W. Carnwath; Optavia, Jay M. Arancio, and Frank Toth, Jr., Plumbing and Heating.
