Falcons beat MA; reach CL playoffs
Things fell into the place just as the Salisbury High School boys basketball team had hoped they would. The Falcons needed a loss from Bangor and then a victory for themselves over Moravian Academy to qualify for the Colonial League playoffs. The Slaters fell to Palmerton on a last-second shot and Salisbury held up it’s end of the bargain against the Lions.
The Falcons (12-9 overall; 11-7 Colonial League) needed a third-quarter comeback for their win Monday.
Salisbury earned the sixth seed in the upcoming tournament and will face either Wilson or Palmerton in the first round on Thursday.
It wasn’t easy for the Falcons on Monday. After taking an early lead of 15-11 heading into the second quarter, Salisbury was outscored 16-3 in the second quarter and trailed by nine points at halftime.
“We were down 27-18 at halftime and needed a spark or a change,” said head coach Jason Weaver. “The guys suggested we switch to a 1-3-1 defense and we played with all our hustle and intensity. We held them to 14 points in the second half and overtime. It wasn’t pretty but we got the job done.”
The change in defensive scheme seemed to work out in their favor as the Falcons held the Lions to 14 points the rest of the way, including just six in the pivotal third quarter where Salisbury made its comeback. The Falcons doubled up Moravian Academy’s scoring in the third, outscoring the Lions 12-6 to take back control of the game.
“We play hard all the time,” Weaver said. “We are a very solid defensive team. We battle and never quit and that defensive intensity helps lead us on the offensive end.”
Now with their Colonial League regular season finished, the Falcons will look to pick up their game with the postseason here.
“We have a chance in the postseason to match up with teams that beat us in the regular season,” said Weaver. “That gives us some added motivation that we didn’t need to work for. If we work hard to keep improving we can have some post season success.”
Kyle Artis finished with a team-high 17 points and Tyson Utesch added nine.
The Colonial League playoffs open Thursday with quarterfinals. Semifinals and championship games are slated for Tuesday and Thursday of next week. The Falcons also have a nonleague game scheduled for this Saturday at East Stroudsburg North.
