Hawks prep for EPC
It’s the final week of the regular season and Bethlehem Catholic is playing the type of basketball that you want heading into the postseason.
The Hawks (16-5) had their six game win streak snapped on Monday night following a 66-58 loss to Nazareth.
While the loss against one of the EPC’s best was a downer for the team heading into the EPC tournament, head coach Scott McClary knows that despite the success they’ve enjoyed, there’s still plenty more to do.
“We are proud of what we have accomplished thus far with a guaranteed share of the Steel Division title, as well as a playoff berth in the EPCs and the District tournament,” McClary said. “However, we know we must get better and more consistent in order to continue winning as the stakes get higher.”
Monday’s loss dropped the Hawks to fifth in the EPC standings, which should pit them against Nazareth (17-4) in the first round of the EPC tourney.
Getting a rematch gives Becahi a chance at redemption, but more importantly, McClary needs his team to heal before the district postseason gets underway.
“Our biggest issue is and will be the same all year long and that is health,” he said. “We have four starters either playing through injury or guys that are held out. This has definitely given others the opportunity to step up, but it has absolutely affected what our talent level actually is and at some point, that is going to matter. Just going to have to continue to try to find new ways to win.”
Freedom (10-11) and Liberty (10-11) both registered wins on Monday, as the Pates handled Dieruff 71-60, while the Hurricanes topped Easton 66-43.
Both teams had a final encounter on Tuesday night to end the regular season with a win by either affecting postseason seeding.
Tuesday’s winner would likely be the seventh seed in the District 11 6A tournament, while the loser would drop to the eighth seed.
