A group of volunteers - teenagers and adults alike - greeted a large number of attendees at a spaghetti dinner at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Roman Catholic Church, 618 Fullerton Ave., Fullerton, Jan. 29.
The weather was brutally cold and windy outside, but inside the warm social hall, the volunteers were serving some welcomed comfort food.
Three time slots for dinners, 4 p.m., 5:15 p.m. and 7 p.m., accommodated guests. There was a rush of hungry congregants who received spiritual nourishment at the 4:30 p.m. Mass and then physical nourishment at the dinner.
A full-course meal - spaghetti, dinner rolls, salad and cake - was assembled. There was a variety of refreshments to go along with the meal.
Fellowship and goodwill were also on display throughout the event.
The director who helps organize the spaghetti dinners, Trina Johns, was working in the kitchen. She is a hands-on leader, unfazed about possibly getting spaghetti sauce splashed on her clothing. She chuckled as she explained that if all goes well, her work fades in the background.
Dinners are a staple fundraising event at St. Elizabeth’s. Johns said the proceeds go to the church general fund.
