The Liberty Bell Museum in historic Zion’s Church, 622 W. Hamilton St., Allentown, will host an opening for its Winter 2022 exhibit “Shepherds of Liberty” 6:30 p.m. Feb. 17.
The exhibit chronicles the long and proud history of Zion Reformed/UCC (Liberty Bell’s) pastors.
Zion’s Reformed Church’s first pastor, the Rev. Dr. John Daniel Gros, served the congregation from 1765-70.
Pastors who followed faithfully served their congregations, local communities and nation.
The Rev. Abraham Blumer, who served from 1771-1801, brought this service to bear as he navigated the hiding of the Liberty Bell in the church from September 1777-June 1778.
Blumer’s service does not diminish the crucial ministries done by the pastors who followed him in service.
These ministries include a long tradition of regular worship services in both German and English, the founding of the Liberty Bell Shrine, later Liberty Bell Museum, and providing its building space for the Jubilee Breakfast ministry.
“As we approach the celebration of the Liberty Bell Museum’s 60th anniversary celebration in September of this year, it is important to celebrate the leadership across the centuries that fought for the story of the Liberty Bell’s refuge in Zion’s church to stay in the community,” said Dr. Dennis Blankowitsch, president of the board of directors for the Liberty Bell Museum.
The opening for the exhibit is scheduled to coincide with the monthly “3rd Thursday” Allentown business initiative.
There is an admission fee.
Parking is available on-street or at the Community Parking Deck at 6th and Walnut streets.
