PHS swimmers take on two strong teams

The Parkland swimming teams encountered some choppy waters last week in battles against Cumberland Valley and Nazareth.

Last Saturday the Trojans lost to the Eagles by a 110-75 score for the girls and 97-85 for the boys. Senior Kayla Johnson continued to show why she is a champion, winning the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle races. Senior Claire Weaver also had a strong performance, winning the 500-yard freestyle and finishing second in the 200-yard freestyle. Sophia Cerimele, another senior, took second in two races - the 100-yard backstroke and the 200-yard individual medley. Senior diver Nicole Stofko was superb in finishing first.

“We look to Nicole to compete at the top level of the district,” Parkland head coach Robert Robitaille said. “Kayla is one of the top overall athletes in the region, and Claire is the true definition of a teammate.”

The boys received good swimming from senior Nicholas Zaffiro, who won the 100-yard breaststroke and 200-yard IM. Senior Luke Willard also served notice he is having a fine senior season, winning the 500-yard freestyle and taking second in the 200-yard freestyle. Harrison Kim, also a senior, finished second in two races - the 100-yard fly and the 200-yard IM.

Diver Ethan Radio continued his outstanding senior season, finishing first. He recently set a Parkland team record with an 11-dive score of 526.95 at the Bucknell Invitational.

“Ethan is an incredibly gifted diving talent that we all hope will compete for a top position in District 11,” Robitaille said. “Harrison is a multisport sprint specialist that has several big places he can fit on the team and we are excited to watch him develop this season.”

Last Tuesday, the Trojans split a meet with Nazareth with the girls winning 128-57 and boys losing 101-85. The relay team of Sada Fleischaker, Cerimele, Johnson, and Weaver won the 200-yard medley, while the foursome of Madison Roseman, Weaver, Cerimele, and Johnson took the 200-yard freestyle relay.

Johnson won also the 200-yard freestyle by 12 seconds over Cerimele, who also reached the winner’s circle by taking the 100-yard butterfly. In addition to her relay work, Weaver had a good solo afternoon, winning the 50- and 100-yard freestyle, while Sydney Platt won the 500-yard freestyle competition and Natasha Goldman won the 200-yard IM.

On the boys’ ledger the Anshul Dadayyapally, Willard, Zaffiro and Kim team won the 200-yard medley. Quality solo swimming included wins by Zaffiro in the 200-yard IM, Willard in the 100-yard butterfly, and Kim in the 100-yard breaststroke.
