Parkland beats Zephyrs, Rovers

Following an emotional loss to rival Emmaus, where the Trojans gave up a fourth-quarter lead, the Parkland High School boys basketball began to pick things up. The Trojans won their next four games, including two in back-to-back nights last weekend in Eastern Pennsylvania Conference play.

Parkland defeated Whitehall last Friday night on senior night and then followed that up with a victory over Easton on Saturday. Both games were in front of the home crowd at Parkland High School.

“Those were two important wins for us, being in conference,” said Trojan head coach Andy Stephens. “Any game in the conference is important and going to be a tough game. We knew that we were capable and needed to get those ones. I’m proud with how the guys have been playing of late.”

The wins over the weekend have highlighted a four-game win streak for the Trojans (11-5 overall, 9-2 EPC), with all four victories coming over EPC opponents in a span of a week. The first one was against Stroudsburg that Saturday, followed by a win at Bethlehem Catholic on Tuesday.

“You want to be playing your best basketball toward the end of the season,” Stephens said. “We’re coming up on February and that’s postseason time. We want to continue playing like this and get the results we work for.”

The two wins over the Zephyrs and Red Rovers over the weekend both came by double figures. Parkland won 45-32 on Friday night behind 14 points from Nick Coval. Then on Saturday, the Trojans were victorious 43-27 with Will Meeker leading the way with a game-high 19 points, and Coval added 13.

“Those two guys have been consistent scorers for us all season,” said Stephens. “When they’re on we will do some special things. They are great players and also team players. They want to see the team do successful as much as they do themselves.”

Parkland has a tough stretch of games in front of it, beginning this week with home games against Central Catholic and Allen, both defending District 11 champions in their respective classifications. Stephens is confident in his bunch.

“We are playing hard, playing tough” Stephens said. “Our defense has saved us sometimes in the last couple of games in finding a way to win. I want to see us start clicking on both ends more consistently.”
