Boys aiming for another postseason run

Northampton’s boys basketball magical run this season may be unique in its own way, and a senior-laden squad continues to make their mark.

This year’s Konkrete Kids’ squad began the week with an overall 13-4 mark, more impressively posting a nine-game winning streak in the process.

They recently knocked off Emmaus for the second time this season, and came away with a hard-fought, overtime victory over Allentown Central Catholic in which senior Issac Harris hit a game-winning, three-pointer in the closing seconds. The Kids were down seven with 1:13 left in the extra period.

“It’s just another game,” deadpanned head coach Coy Stampone. “We were up six in the fourth quarter, and they tied it up. There were so many changes throughout the game, and it was a great game to watch.”

Stampone stressed the senior leadership, as well as other contributors, has been the catalyst.

Harris, along with fellow seniors Isaiah Harris, Lucas Lesko, Cooper King, Caden Reph, and sophomore Tristan Pinnock, have been setting the pace.

“You can look out on the floor, and see four or five seniors on the floor at any given time,” he said. Pinnock is really playing well. He, King, and Reph were all leaders of the football team, and they brought that with them to basketball. Pinnock played a lot for us last year, and he doesn’t play like a sophomore.

“They are all coming on at the right time for us.”

Stampone wasn’t sure how his veteran team would respond with last year’s shortened COVID season.

“We only played nine regular-season games last year,” he said. “We really need to have the 22 games in a season.

“We had a lot of returning starters back, and we thought we could have a good year. Still, we weren’t sure because of last season.”

The veteran coach has been impressed with his team’s character and composure.

“This is a tight-knit group, and there is some chemistry there,” said Stampone. “We started to come together at the start of the season. We had a rough part of the schedule at the beginning of the season.

“But they have shown the ability to come back in games, and you can see that they have gained more confidence. It’s an interesting group.”

Yet, the Kids have been battle-tested.

“Our division is brutal,” said Stampone. “Teams are beating up on each other. Hopefully, that will help us play better in the playoffs.”

Stampone drew a comparison of his current club to a former one. One comparison involved the 2017-18 team that posted an overall 18-8 record and advanced to the district finals behind Aidan Elwood and Cory Weisenberger. They had a 13-game winning streak during that season after they began the year with a 3-3 mark,

“Elwood and Weisenberger were our two leading scorers,” said Stampone. “We also had guys like senior Mike Torres and sophomores Spencer Cole, Zach Gula and Donte Rodriguez, who all played quality minutes for us.

“That team and the current team are similar in many ways. The sophomore would play key roles as seniors for us two years later on a team that also was similar.”

The Kids had five games left on their schedule that began with road games at Parkland Tuesday and Palmerton Wednesday. They will travel to Whitehall Friday before closing the regular season with home games against Catasauqua Saturday and Allen Monday.

“It’s five games in six days,” said Stampone. “We just have to keep playing and working hard.”
