LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Rovers rally, top BC

Monday night’s girls basketball game between Bethlehem Catholic and Easton was the kind that didn’t disappoint as the Red Rovers came back from a 10 point deficit at halftime to claim a 38-37 victory over the Golden Hawks at Becahi.

“That third quarter got away from us a little bit. We got open looks, but it’s a make or miss game, and for us, in the first half, we were going in,” said Becahi coach Jose Medina. “Second half, we didn’t make them, but our defense kept us in. Up by one with 10 seconds to go, you can’t ask for anything better than that.”

The Hawks led 37-36 with a little over two minutes left, and held possession for the next 90 seconds or so. Easton had fouls to give, and finally drew a one-and-one with 28 seconds left. The miss was rebounded by Easton, and Makenna Zimmerman landed a shot from the corner with time running out.

Becahi was able to get two shots off before time expired but couldn’t convert.

It was Zimmerman who started things off for Easton with a three pointer in the first 30 seconds of play. Becahi’s Cici Hernandez responded with her own three 30 seconds later, and when Easton lost the ball on a pass that went out of bounds, Becahi’s Stephanie Donato landed a three pointer followed by another from Keyara Walters.

The second quarter belonged to the Hawks as the Red Rovers lost the ball out of bounds again, and Donato drained two more threes. Santos scored on a layup after a steal by Yarian Fernandez who made a pass to Santos while flat on her stomach, but three consecutive turnovers by the Hawks in the third quarter resulted in three easy buckets for Easton’s Anye Staton, and Coach Medina called a timeout.

“Just to settle them down and get them focused on things we could control,” Medina said. “One thing we talk about is ABC, always be confident. That’s what we were reminding them of.”

But the Hawks were held to just two points and scored those two on a bucket by Akasha Santos on a feed by Hernandez at the very end of the third quarter to tie the game, 27-27.

As the fourth quarter played out, it appeared as if Walters’ earlier three point play would be the difference in the game while the two teams traded scores throughout the first six minutes. While time was on the side of both teams as Becahi led 37-36 with two minutes left, the difference in the game became whether the Hawks could hold off the Red Rovers for that much time.

“We’ve got to go in, do our job, and I give them a lot of credit. They fought, and Easton did a great job, and today was their day,” Medina said. “[Tuesday] will be our fourth game in five days, so we’re finding out a lot about ourselves.”

Easton’s Evalyse Cole had a game high 11 points.

Donato was the top scorer for Becahi with nine points, followed by Hernandez and Kendra Rigo who had eight apiece.

The Hawks will have a second chance at the Red Rovers this Friday night at Easton.
