Girls feel they are on right path
Catasauqua’ girls’ basketball team recently broke an eight-game losing streak with a 52-37 victory over Kutztown.
Despite their woes, Rough Riders’ head coach Mark Seremula insisted his team wasn’t struggling.
“In terms of play, no,” he said. “In terms of wins and losses, yes. Five or six of the teams we faced likely will be in the league playoffs.
“Against Bangor, we couldn’t find the basket. We were up two at the half against Wilson, and down by two at half against Notre Dame. In that game, we were right there at the end.
“Against Pen Argyl, we were down 18 in the second quarter, and we took the lead with two minutes to go. Lailey Polanco had 28 and Sophia Becker had 17 in that game. You won’t find too many sophomores around who can do that.
“We have five sophomores and three juniors in our rotation. We’re young, and we are still learning how to finish games.”
Against Kutztown, Seremula was impressed with his team’s effort that raised their overall record to 4-11. Polanco had 24 points and Becker had 13 with 11 rebounds.
For the season, Polanco is averaging 10.3 points per game followed by Delaney Troxell (8.4) and Becker (8.1)
In rebounding, Becker is the leading rebounder (7.4) followed by Troxell (6.1).
“The girls played a great team game against Kutztown,” said Seremula. “We won the rebounding battle and got great individual efforts from Alivia Bear and Kaylee Weidaw, who held Kutztown’s best player to 4-for-24 shooting.
“Lailey Polanco handled the ball all game, and more importantly had zero turnovers. Sophie Becker dominated the paint.”
The Roughies realize that making districts is a true long shot, as they would have to win all of their seven remaining games.
“We feel confident about our last seven games,” added Seremula. “It would be nice to get to 10 wins, which would make us a game short. But it has been a big improvement from zero wins last year.”
Regardless of the outcome, Seremula is confident his team is following the right path.
“I can think back to when I coached at Wilson and we were 4-20 one year with four sophomores starting like we have,” he said. “Two years later, we won the league.
“I can see his group playing for a championship before they are gone. I do believe we made major strides this year. We’ll see.”
