Northampton swimmers on win streaks

On Tuesday evening January 11, the Northampton swim and dive team traveled to Freedom High School for a meet that would end in a win for the Northampton boys and tie for the girls. The squad would follow this performance with two more wins at home against William Allen High School on Tuesday, January 18.

The Northampton girls performance against Freedom was driven by individual and team wins. Senior Olivia Szerencsits claimed first place in both the 200 individual medley event (2:25.89) and the 500 freestyle event (5:24.67) and Brenna Caley was first to the wall in the 50 freestyle sprint with a time of 29.98. Ava Gower also grabbed the spotlight when she out-touched Freedom’s swimmer in the 100 backstroke event and posted a first-place finish by less than 3 tenths of a second. The girls concluded the meet with a win in the 400 freestyle event by the team of Szerencsits, Caley, Andrea Davidson, and Gower (4:17.93).

The boys relays were among the highlight performances vs. Freedom. The boys claimed a win in the 200 freestyle relay from the team of Keith DeMieri, Ash Murphy, Gabriel Gower, and Bryce Torres and the boys relay team of Stephen Carrasco, Micah Sommons, Ethan Brobst, and Ryan Franke closed the meet with a decisive win the 400 freestyle relay in 4:02.51.

Murphy also claimed a first-place win in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:20.07 and Carrasco was first to the wall in the 500 Freestyle event with a time of 6:46.53.

On Tuesday, January 18, Northampton welcomed William Allen for a home meet that concluded with winning scores for both the boys and girls, 100-56 and 99-70, respectively.

The Northampton relay teams started the meet strong against William Allen with wins in both the girls and boys 200 medley relay events. The girls team of Ava Gower, Gabriella Oswald, Olivia Szerencsits and Brenna Caley claimed a decisive win in 2:09.18. The boys relay team of Micah Sommons, Ethan Brobst, Ryan Franke and Boden Burkhard followed with another win in 2:07.06.

Individual wins were plentiful for the Northampton girls with multiple first place finishes including Gower in the 200 and 500 freestyle, Szerencsits in the 200 IM and 100 butterfly, Oswald in the 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke and Caley in the 100 backstroke. For the boys, Brobst claimed first in the 200 IM and 100 Backstroke, Sommons was first the wall in the 200 and 500 freestyle events, Michael McInichenko was first in the 100 freestyle, and Franke posted a first place win in the 100 butterfly.

Northampton is on the road again this week for an away meet at Nazareth on Thursday, January 20th.
