Franklin Street curb and sidewalk project authorized for bidding
The Alburtis Borough Council held its regular board meeting Jan. 12 at borough hall without public comment.
Mayor Kathleen Palmer stated in her report Police Chief Robert Palmer retired at the start of the year and a send-off was held. Chief Palmer has been in law enforcement for over 40 years.
Councilman John Aleszczyk mentioned the upcoming snowstorm and was concerned about people just parking on the roads. This would disrupt the ability to plow certain portions of the road, which may then lead to a buildup of snow and ice. Council said they may put out a warning on their website and social media pages to not park on the road on the day of the storm.
The meeting minutes of the previous two meetings and the bills for payment were approved.
The treasurer’s report, administration report and maintenance report were all approved without comment from council. They did not receive a report from the Macungie Ambulance Corps.
In administration, Lehigh County Executive Phillips Armstrong told council a budget was set aside for Lockridge Park. The park badly needs renovation. He, then, spoke about how 9-1-1 will be going digital in the county, which is going to cost around $25 million. He concluded by speaking a bit about the COVID-19 situation and on some bridge and road renovations.
Next, the Franklin Street curb and sidewalk reconstruction project was on the agenda. The board approved the authorization to bid for the project.
Resolution 2022-3 was, then, approved. Hector Moss was appointed to the pension board.
The maintenance department will receive new mowers as per council. They chose a John Deere brand tractor mower.
A new system was approved for the borough hall keys. There will be a sign-out sheet for each committee chair to take the key so they can access the building for a meeting after hours. Prior, the mayor, council president, council vice president and borough manager only had keys.
There was no discussion on the police chief position. It will be discussed at the next meeting.
Council President Ron DeIaco added an item to the agenda for the Boy Scout who wants to build a dedicated pathway with landscaping leading to the memorial plaque located at the Alburtis Lockridge Historical Society building off Church Lane. The Boy Scout budgeted the project at $2,250. The borough approved loaning the money to the Scout for the project. The Boy Scout is doing a voucher program with Subway to earn the money back.
The next Alburtis Borough Council meeting will be held Jan. 26, at borough hall, 260 Franklin St., Alburtis.
