Boys hoop team looks to keep improving
After a close 54-52 loss to Bethlehem Catholic, Northampton’s boys’ basketball 4-4 season could have dipped either way with undefeated Emmaus on the horizon.
But the Konkrete Kids pulled out a hard-fought, 46-42 victory, and it catapulted them into their current four-game winning streak to begin the week.
“We had lost four games at that point to Allentown Central Catholic, Parkland, Liberty, and Bethlehem Catholic,” said head coach Coy Stampone. “The Liberty and Beca losses were both by two points and could have gone either way.
“We came out strong against Emmaus and built a 10-point lead, and then we had to hold them off in the end. It was a motivator for us and a good win. But we have plenty of those potential situations coming up.”
Since Emmaus, the Kids have defeated Stroudsburg (64-55), Whitehall (55-40), and their latest win over Pocono Mountain East (68-46).
Like he always does, Stampone keeps everything in its proper perspective for his 8-4 team.
“We played well, and we took care of business,” he stated. “It was a good win against (Pocono Mountain) East, and we were able to get everyone in the game. That’s always nice because these guys are busting their hump in practice.
“We want to try and keep teams in the 40s. But we still haven’t put a full game together.”
Senior Issac Harris is the team’s leading scorer averaging 19.6 points per game, and he began the week needing 48 points to reach the 1,000-point career mark. Harris is the team’s leading rebounder averaging 6.5 per clip.
Fellow senior Lucas Lesko is the team’s second-leading scorer and has averaged 13.8 points and 6.1 rebounds per contest. Senior Isaiah Harris is averaging 5.4 points and 3.0 assists per game.
“We continue to have a good one-two punch Issac and Lucas,” added Stampone. “Isaiah has done a great job running the point.
“We have had a good rotation where we’re playing eight or nine guys. We have the luxury of playing certain guys against certain defenses whether we’re seeing a man or zone. We have six or seven top guys, but it will depend on the situation of the game.”
The Kids traveled to Nazareth Tuesday before a game at Allen Friday night. They then have a quick turnaround hosting Blue Mountain Saturday.
Despite the opponent, it is about playing your game.
“This is another big week for us,” said Stampone. “Nazareth and Allen will be a challenge, and Blue Mountain had an 8-3 record. There aren’t any nights off in the EPC (East Penn Conference).
“We always talk about it. We need to work on getting everything right for us. We know we have to work on things, and not just concentrate on our opponent. We have to keep improving as a team.”
Stampone also isn’t keeping an eye on his team’s wins, as the Kids need three to clinch a district berth.
“Eleven is the magic number,” he said. “But we’re not putting a lot of focus on that. We just need to go out and play the best we can, and get better every day.”
