LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

BC set for big week

Bethlehem Catholic doesn’t get many weeks of dual meets where excitement can be forged about the competition, but this week is one of those.

Coming off a weekend where the team took home a second place finish at the Escape the Rock tournament, the Hawks (4-0) now move forward to a week with Easton (11-1) and Notre Dame-Green Pond (4-1) on the schedule.

After demolishing all four of their opponents in dual meets this season, the Hawks finally will be able to break a sweat this week, starting with Wednesday’s home meeting against the Rovers on Senior night.

“We are very excited about this upcoming week and the weeks that follow,” said head coach Jeff Karam. “Easton and Notre Dame both have very strong programs and are well coached. It’ll definitely be a challenge and should provide a great atmosphere.

I always look forward to wrestling against [Easton coach] Jody’s [Karam] team. They’re well conditioned, physical, and never back down. It should be a fun match.”

Saturday brings a road trip to Notre Dame, where arguably, the top two programs in the area take center stage in one of the marquee matchups of the regular season.

“Saturday’s match against Notre Dame is even bigger and hopefully generates some excitement for area fans,” said Karam. “They are a very solid team that match up extremely well against us. I expect it to be a very close match that could go either way.”

While it may be close, Becahi’s roster this season continues to prove as one of the state’s best, if not, the best.

The Hawks came away from the Escape the Rock with two tournament champions in freshman 106-pounder Nate Desmond and junior Tyler Kasak (138).

Desmond topped Malvern Prep’s Anthony Mutarelli 6-4 in the finals, while Kasak handled Kelvin Griffin of the Hill School 7-3.

The Hawks placed six wrestler in total at the tournament including Dante Frinzi (third at 126), Cael McIntyre (fourth at 120), Cole Campbell (fifth at 113) and Ashton Campbell (seventh at 132).

“Overall I was impressed with the team effort, particularly on the second day,” said Karam. “We really put together some good wins in the last few rounds that took us from fourth to a second place finish. We definitely gave up way too many one-point losses on the first day and we found a way to win those close bouts on day two which made a huge difference.”

The duo of Desmond and Kasak has proved that both are on the path toward eyeing state titles this season, which isn’t a surprise for anyone.

“Nate and Tyler continue to impress each day they step on the mat,” said Karam. “Both of them possess a strong desire to reach their potential and really challenge themselves against the best wrestlers in the country. They want those matches and the opportunity to prove themselves. Nate is just very mature and focused for a freshman. He has set a high standard for himself and puts in the work each day to reach his goals. He’s his own biggest critic, even in wins against nationally ranked opponents, and is always looking to improve.”
