Shirley M. McElroy, 87, of Emmaus, died Jan. 2, 2022, in Lehigh Valley Hospital. She was the wife of the late Robert M. “Mickey” McElroy. They celebrated 65 years of marriage prior to his death. Born in Allentown, she was the daughter of the late Amelio and Dorothy (Freed) Alloggio.
She worked as a sewing machine operator for the former Phoenix Clothes and in the mail room at Rodale for many years, retiring in 1996.
She was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church, where she was a choir member for over 20 years and sat in the same pew every Sunday.
She was a member and past president of Emmaus Fire Company #1 Ladies Auxiliary and a member of the Rodalians.
She loved birds and feeding them. She always had a smile on her face, cared deeply for others, loved baking for the neighbors, was always singing and loved her trips to Michigan to visit her grandchildren.
She is survived by a son, Brian R., of Emmaus; a daughter, Beverly J. and her husband, David Soltysiak, of Alpena, Mich.; brothers, James Alloggio, of Sandusky, Ohio and Charles Alloggio and his wife, Barbara, of Keeseville, N.Y.; sisters, Jean Pulli, of Bath and Theresa Lenig, of Breinigsville; grandchildren, Jamie L. and Ryan M. Soltysiak; great-grandchildren, Amelia, Mylan, Jayce and Hailey. She was predeceased by siblings, Carmen Alloggio and Helen Wasko.
