Harry Buchin
Harry Buchin, 99, of West Palm Beach, Fla., formerly of Macungie, died Jan. 4, 2022. He was the husband of the late Margaret H. (Wendlant) and Rachel I. (Gehman) Buchin. Born in Emmaus, he was a son of the late Anthony and Tessie (Bandura) Buchin.
At the age of five his family moved to Zionsville. He attended grades 1-8 at Koch’s School in Upper Milford Township and graduated from Emmaus High School in 1941. He then worked in the time study department for Mack Trucks, Inc., until he was drafted and inducted into the Army Signal Corps at Camp Crowder, Mo. He then attended Carleton College to study engineering under the Army Specialized Training Program, before serving overseas. In addition to the Bronze Star Medal, European-Africa-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal (with three bronze stars), the Pacific Theater Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal, he was awarded the Combat Infantryman’s Badge and several citations and medals from France.
After serving his country, he returned home and married and settled in Macungie and resumed working for Mack Trucks as a time study engineer until 1950. He then opened Buchin Hardware, specializing in small appliance repair, retiring in 2004.
He was a Justice of the Peace for Macungie during part of the time he had his hardware store. He also served as a notary for almost 50 years, including performing notary service for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and for several local banks. He collected taxes for the borough and the school district and most people stopped to pay in person. He was able to help, even at hours long after other businesses would have closed. He was there for his customers and filled a small town need.
He had a ham radio and connected to others beyond Macungie. He was a trailblazer in his own photography.
He was active with the local VFW as a life member, was a life member of the American Legion and a member of both the 324th Infantry Regiment and 44th Infantry Division associations.
He was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church, Macungie.
He is survived by brothers, John and Joseph Buchen, both of Zionsville; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by infant daughters and a son, Richard; siblings, Katharine Schwartz, Helen Buchen, Mary Rumfield and Julia Sterner.
