Budget for 2022 approved

The regular Lower Macungie Township Board of Commissioners meeting was held Dec. 16, 2021 where the 2022 budget and fee schedule were approved. The real estate tax remains at .5 mils.

In other business, Ordinance 2021-10 was approved which authorizes a General Obligation note to finance funding for preserving open space. This transaction is being handled through First Keystone Community Bank in the amount of $6,142,000 and will be funded with the aid of the .15 percent Earned Income Tax. The loan will be paid back within five years.

An immediate need to preserve a very large piece of land is in the works. The property is under imminent threat of development but with the successful voter referendum and financing, this will allow this property to be preserved.

An amendment to the Conditions of Approval for Resolution 2021-62 for the Suburban Car Wash was approved. This project will add an additional car wash tunnel to the already established car wash at 6452 Hamilton Blvd.

A sewer planning module for ABE Doors redevelopment was approved. This project adds a car wash, two retail stores and a restaurant with outdoor seating.

With much sadness, the board announced the passing of Bonnie Kirka who was a part of the recreation center team. A moment of silence was held in her memory.

This commissioners meeting was the last meeting for President Ron Beitler. Commissioner Brian Higgins spoke about Beitler’s accomplishments over his eight year tenure. Transparency has been improved as well as land preservation. He was also involved with the official township map project. The commissioners presented Beitler with a gift of a plaque thanking him for his service.
