The Liberty Hurricanes were the 2021 Salisbury Holiday Tournament champions with a 57-28 victory over Oley Valley on Dec. 28 and a 49-22 victory over Saucon Valley on Dec. 29 at Salisbury High School.
“I liked our defensive pressure. That’s something we’ve been working on and that we’ve been preaching overall,” said Liberty head coach Jarrett Carnes. “It’s just nice to go five straight, so we’re building, and we have momentum.”
Top scorers for the Hurricanes in their game against Oley Valley were Ruby Miller (17) Layla Orth (11), Emma Pukszyn (11), and Abby Thompson (9).
“The tournament was definitely a confidence boost, especially coming into the second day after winning our first game,” Coach Carnes said. “There were a lot of girls who had to step up because we had a couple girls out, so it was nice and a confidence boost for everybody.”
Top scorers for the Hurricanes in their game against Saucon Valley were Orth (19), Miller (12), and Tamia Bruce (9).
Orth and Miller were named to the All-Tournament team, and Miller was tournament MVP.
“I think we have played great defense, we’ve gotten multiple steals, we’re always making great passes. I’m so proud of our team and how far we’ve come,” Miller said. “I think I brought a lot of confidence on the court, looked for the open shots, I passed to the right teammates, and played great defense.”
Coach Carnes was proud of Miller’s tournament play.
“I’m super proud of her,” he said. “She attacks, attacks, attacks. She shoots the ball, plays defense. She plays multiple sports, so I’m happy she’s doing well on the court too.”
