Mary Jane Shumberger

Mary Jane Shumberger, 95, of Celebration, Fla., and formerly of Whitehall, died Dec. 15, 2021. She was the wife of the late George A. Shumberger for 67 years.

Born in Reading, she was a daughter of Dr. Raymond J. and Grace J. Staudy Heckman.

She was a 1944 graduate of Allentown High School and a 1948 graduate from Gettysburg College. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Eta Sigma Phi, Delta Phi Alpha honor fraternities and had extra credits at Kutztown University.

She taught German, Latin and English at Mohnton High School; history and English at East Pennsboro; and German at Elizabethtown High School, Elizabethtown College and Whitehall High School. She retired after 34 years of teaching.

She was a Whitehall Township Public Library board member. She was a president of the Whitehall Women’s and the Red Hatters clubs in Whitehall and of the Lehigh Valley Hospital-Muhlenberg auxiliary. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Hill Toppers New Life Group and of the Gettysburg College and St. John’s Lutheran Church choirs.

She was a Lutheran. She enjoyed nondenominational services with Celebrate Seniors and Illuminate Church in Florida.

She is survived by a son, Kurt A. and his wife Linda; a grandson, Kurt Erich George Shumberger of Kissimmee, Fla.; special friend and caregiver, Sharon Carey; and friends.
