Liberty’s girls swim team edged Pottsville, 94-89, in the Hurricanes’ home opener on Dec. 15.
The Hurricanes’ closest swims were in the 100 butterfly where Liberty’s Brooke Sergent took first place in 1:00.80 ahead of Pottsville’s Taleah Ruben in 1:00.99, and in the 200 free relay where Liberty anchor Sarah Park touched the wall ahead of Pottsville’s Elena Martinko.
“It was pretty close when I was diving in,” Park said. “I knew the other team was right there with me and my coaches talked to me about sprinting, getting up and going right away, so that’s what I was focusing on, just going all out.”
Park, Sydney Taylor, Katie Bruno, and Monica Bruno combined for a time of 1:53.26, and Martinko, Carly Mohl, Elizabeth Martinko, and Adalia Laselva finished in 1:54.68.
In two other close races, Mohl, Ruben, Laselva, and Julia Balusis won the 200 medley relay with a time of 2:03.79 over Sergent, Bruno, Bruno, and Park with a time of 2:03.94, and in the 50 free, Park was out touched by Balusis, 26.85 to 27.16.
Sergent was a winner in the 200 IM with a time of 2:20.88, Julia Pinter swam to a first-place finish in the 500 free in 6:04.64, and Katie Bruno won the 100 breaststroke in 1:18.62.
“The girls team, we’re all really close, and it’s so much fun,” said Park. “We have a lot of swimmers back after the COVID year, and it’s a nice team environment.”
Liberty’s girls lost their season opener to Nazareth, 182-126, on Dec. 14.
Liberty’s individual event winners in the meet against the Blue Eagles were Pinter in the 500 free with a time of 6:05.49, and Sergent in the 200 free with a time of 2:08.65 and in the 100 fly with a time of 1:01.52.
The Hurricanes are scheduled to host Southern Lehigh on Dec. 27.
